Congo Vets Honoured >>

The Irish Defence Forces have been deployed on overseas missions for over 50 years, beginning in 1958 with observers in the Lebanon. Ground troops were sent to the Congo in 1960, followed by others which continue to the present day including Cyprus, Lebanon, East Europe, Iran, Iraq, Chad and Kosovo.

The Irish Army saw action in the Congo for the first time since the civil war and also in many other missions down through the years.

The early missions and the Congo in particular were a huge change from peacetime soldiering in Ireland.

The tactics and equipment in use by the army in 1960 when first deployed to the Congo were outdated and not really suited for the type of situations encountered, this was the beginning of a huge learning curve leading to the well equipped and professional army we have today.

Despite being ill equipped in the early years Irish forces acquitted themselves well and are recognized internationally for their professionalism and dedication to whatever tasks they are assigned.

Many soldiers from the 1st Motor/Cavalry Squadron in Fermoy took part in all the deployments over the years and continue to serve on various overseas missions to the present day.

This web site is dedicated to all UN veterans past and present. We hope you enjoy your visit.
