AGC SYNOPSIS

The 22 Annual General Convention was held last Saturday in Ceannt Barracks NCOs Mess. It was a very well organised affair with all 16 Posts in attendance.Post 32, Kerry attending for the first AGC were afforded a very warm welcome. The business of the day went through in jig time. There were four motions on amendments to the constitution. The first three proposed by Charlie Mott NDO and related to membership issues. He was the only speaker and they were carried unopposed. The fourth issue was the proposal to split the membership fees between HQ and the subscribing Posts. This motion was supported by 2 Posts namely Cork and Fermoy. All other posts who spoke on the issue were opposed to it. Gerry Kelleher and I spoke for while Mick Dillon National Treasurer, Charlie Mott NDO and Eddie Robinson Chairman National Finance Committee were named opponents.

It was a fair debate in which both sides were given good order and a fair amount of time to articulate their reasoning on the motion. The bottom line however was the result of the voting in which there was a little irony involved. In total, Cork 17 votes and Fermoy 24 votes had a total of 41 votes. So imagine our surprise when our total vote was announced at 69 for. One post (no name no pack drill) inadvertently voted for instead of against. Could you imagine the consternation if this error has swayed the day in our favour. Talk about demands for revotes.

Anyway we got out time to put across our views. 14 out of 16 Posts are opposed to the motion so now in true Fermoy fashion we accept the democratic decision and move on. In my opinion it is a dead issue and should not be raised again unless there is a sea change amongst other Posts. The one positive message from all opposed speakers was very constant; presently the finances of the association is strong and should any post need assistance through either an interest free loan or grant aid all one has to do is fill in the appropriate form and submit it with full details. The application will stand or fall on its own merits.

The evening was rounded off with a fine meal and a dance.Well done Post 11, Post 9 Athlone is hosting next years AGC .Without being morbid how many of us will be there to see it? In his address Charlie Mott said 2011 was the best recruiting year in the past decade with 180 plus between new and lapsed members joining. Yet between deaths of members and the loss of widows and other subscribers including serving soldiers who were not members we ended up the year with a nett gain of 26 subscriptions. So 180 plus netting out at 26 shows to points; our tenuious hold on life and our need to continue recruiting to keep the association viable.

A timely reminder, the victorious 1 Cav Sqn All Army 2011 Falling Plate Team will be bringing the Paddy Scully Trophy home to Fermoy on Friday 22 of this month. The venue is Clancy’s and it promises to be a great night. It would be greatly appreciated if the “shots” from the golden era of Fermoy Shooting turned out to congratulate today’s new crop and Liam McGahern in their great achievement. Hopefully it will be the first of many. It will also be a chance to wish Liam Bon Voyage prior to his upcoming trip to Afghanistan . It’s great to see the Black, Rad and Green colours continuing to fly so proudly. We wish Liam a safe and uneventful tour.

That time is almost upon us: Killarney. There has been a slight change in the pick up point. It is now the long bar. What hasn’t changed is the departure time remains 2pm ( 14:00 ). We’ve always prided ourselves on punctuality so if you wish to start off the journey with a “mineral” please allow enough time to finish it for 2pm. We will be picking up in Glanworth so any lateness leaving Fermoy has a knock on effect down the line. A minibus is laid on for those wishing to travel outside of Killarney. It’s up to those travelling on the day to decide where they wish to go. Time of departure hasn’t been set for Sunday but it is hoped to leave at a time which gets us into Glanworth for a stop at Macs before getting into Fermoy for the de-brief later that afternoon. It would be nice if the weather holds but it wont be a major factor in determining how the weekend goes. Eight from Portlaoise will be teaming up with us, most of us have met previously.

Don’t forget ; Saturday the 30 th of this month is our flag day. Our aim is to have as many members as possible collecting and to try to have at least one uniformed member at each point. But uniformed or not or a member or not we would appreciate help from any quarter to make the day a success. Our funds are low and this is our only source of Post income.

We also have our sponsored cycle/walk in aid of the local scouts and St Joseph ’s National School in the very near future details of which will be given at our monthly meeting in Fermoy Pitch and Putt Clubhouse on Thursday 28 th of this month. Martin will brief all on the details of the AGC and questions are welcome.

Also in the near future is our annual most enjoyable pilgrimage to Plunkett Bks and other venues, Ceannt Mess and the Horse and Jockey to name two on Saturday 3 rd September for Cavalry Day. As usual a bus will be hired for the day the size of which will depend on members travelling. On Saturday 17 th September Tpr Pat Mullins Mass will be celebrated. It being the 50 th Anniversary of his MIA we hope to make it a special day for his family. More details will be available closer the date.

Our continued good wishes to Mossy Fennell following his most unfortunate cycling accident which will keep him out of work for many a month. For those of us who know Mossy will know how this will really going to be the worst part of his rehabilitation. Take care Mossy and a full and speedy recovery.
